Therapy for Parents

In the delicate dance of parenting, we often find ourselves echoing the very behaviors we swore to avoid - the sharp tones of our parents emerging in moments of stress. This cycle, rooted in our own experiences, challenges us to find a balance between embracing our children's needs and acknowledging our own boundaries. We seek not only to break these cycles but to foster an environment of understanding and growth, where effective communication and mutual respect pave the way for a future where every family member's needs are seen and valued.

Does this sound familiar?

Children are supposed to have high energy, be excitable, and loud, but when your patience has run out you feel like you get reactive with them. You've worked so hard not to be like your parent, but suddenly something you say sounds just like them and you're beating yourself up, feeling like you're failing again. As a child, you were told to go away and be quiet; after all, that's what kept the peace, right? But now your expectations of your children have been skewed and you feel overwhelmed and overstimulated easily. Your kids love your hugs and touches, but you're touched-out. You want to make sure you're meeting your child's needs, but where's the balance for what you need?

Growing up, disagreements were met with screaming. You try to communicate calmly with your partner and children, but sometimes you end up raising your voice and then feel guilty. You want to be able to have healthy communication with your family, but it's hard to take some space, calm down, and then try the conversation again.

Many clients I work with have come to recognize that their parent was not always there to protect them. Some have debated talking to their parent about it but know it won't go well. Others have found the courage to have this conversation and have been met with, "I don't remember that," or "That didn't happen." The best case is your parent acknowledges they made a mistake and apologizes, whether they remember it or not.

Whether you decide you need to confront the past or not, you know you want to stop this pattern within your family. Figuring out how to let go of anger, resentment, and hurt can feel impossible. Let me help you sort through all of this, and together we can find ways to help set you up for calm communication and daily ways to de-stress from all your parenting responsibilities.
